A big school can be very daunting and stress full for an anxious learner. So why do learners find school stressful?
Teachers are under a lot of pressure to make sure learners meet the requirements set out by the Department of Education. On top of this, they have a lot of administrative work required by the department to complete. This pressure is then also felt by the learners because they know they must meet these requirements in a set time. In addition, due to the tempo at school, a lot of work is sent home because the class is too big for the teacher to address each child’s needs. Children then hardly have time for themselves because they must complete all the work at home. All of this makes children anxious, and then they cannot succeed.
Many children suffer from social anxiety. This is not the same as being shy. When you are shy, you might find it difficult to warm up to people, and you might prefer a smaller group of friends. Social anxiety can be debilitating, and children tend to withdraw totally, and it is tough for them to make friends. Most of them have no friends at school, so they are terrified and anxious when they go to school. They are often teased about this.
At Hillside Akademie, our classes are small, so teachers can focus on each child’s individual needs, academically, emotionally, and socially.
Each child needs time and space to deal with their challenges. Social anxiety can cause children to isolate themselves totally. It is therefore vital that they attend a homeschool centre like Hillside Akademie. We can help them stay on track with their workload and motivate them to succeed.
