Welcome to Hillside Akademie! We are thrilled to introduce our dedicated and dynamic principal and owner, Deirdre Steenekamp.

 A Journey from Cape Town to Hillside

Deirdre was born in the beautiful city of Cape Town, where her journey in education began. She matriculated from Hoërskool Linden and pursued a career in teaching, driven by a profound interest in helping learners overcome learning barriers. This passion has been a guiding force in her career, leading her to specialize in understanding and supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

A Champion for All Learners

With a keen focus on learners with ASD, Deirdre believes in harnessing the unique strengths and abilities of each child, helping them to use their “superpower” to thrive. She has completed Level One of Integrated Learning Therapy, equipping her with the tools and knowledge to support students with diverse learning needs effectively.

 An International Educator

Deirdre is also a qualified TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teacher. She has taught and trained teachers in Taiwan, broadening her experience and understanding of diverse educational contexts. Her international experience enriches her approach to education, bringing a global perspective to Hillside Akademie.

 An Adventurous Spirit

Beyond the classroom, Deirdre is an avid athlete. She has successfully completed the Argus Cycle Race and conquered the Midmar Mile four times. Her love for swimming extends to aqua aerobics, a fun and effective way to stay fit and active.

Creative Pursuits

In her free time, Deirdre enjoys expressing her creativity through crocheting, knitting, and painting. These hobbies not only allow her to unwind but also reflect her patient and meticulous nature—qualities that make her an exceptional educator and leader.

Family and Exploration

Deirdre is happily married to Philip, and together they have two sons, Erik (18) and Benjan (14). As a family, they cherish their time together, often embarking on road trips and exploring new places. These adventures create cherished memories and strengthen their bond.
