So why do we use CAPS at Hillside Akademie, and what makes us different?
It is our dream to place each learner back into a mainstream school if possible. If we follow the curriculum as set out by the department of education, it helps the learner return to a mainstream school. At Hillside Akademie, our classes are small, allowing teachers to assist a child when they struggle with certain concepts. We include extra material where needed to encourage the learner to achieve their goals. Our teacher-student ratio is 1 to 10, which is an excellent opportunity for teachers to be creative with the curriculum and make it fun and exciting for our learners. Our foundation phase (gr R to 3) targets the three main areas: reading, writing, and mathematics. From gr R to 3, learners learn how to read; from gr 4, learners read to learn. That is why reading is such an essential building block in this phase.
We can also focus on our gifted learners by creating more advanced content for them to follow. Critical thinking skills are also vital to us because it helps our learners to solve problems independently later on in their school career.
